Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless genius of Felix Mendelssohn with the Philharmonia Orchestra's stunning 2023 release, a comprehensive collection of his most celebrated works. This album is a treasure trove of classical masterpieces, spanning over five hours of enchanting music that showcases Mendelssohn's unparalleled compositional prowess and the Philharmonia Orchestra's virtuosic performance.

The album opens with the dramatic and powerful "Elijah" oratorio, featuring choral and solo pieces that highlight Mendelssohn's ability to blend profound emotion with intricate musical structures. The orchestral works, including the "Italian" Symphony No. 4 and the "Scottish" Symphony No. 3, are performed with such precision and passion that they bring to life the vivid landscapes and cultural influences that inspired Mendelssohn.

A particular highlight is the "A Midsummer Night's Dream" suite, where the Philharmonia Orchestra captures the whimsical and ethereal qualities of Mendelssohn's score, from the playful "Scherzo" to the iconic "Wedding March." The album also features the "Violin Concerto in E Minor," a showpiece that demands technical brilliance and expressive depth, beautifully rendered by the orchestra.

This collection is not just a compilation of Mendelssohn's works but a testament to his enduring legacy. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to Mendelssohn's music, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The Philharmonia Orchestra's dedication to authenticity and artistic excellence shines through in every note, making this a definitive addition to any classical music lover's collection.

About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
