Product description

"Panama 500" by Danilo Pérez is a vibrant and captivating exploration of the pianist's native land, released on Mack Avenue Records in 2014. This Latin jazz album commemorates the 500th anniversary of Panama's discovery, offering a rich and diverse musical journey through the country's cultural heritage and history.

The album features Danilo Pérez on piano, accompanied by an ensemble of talented musicians including John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and Ben Street on acoustic bass. The twelve-track collection spans 51 minutes, blending traditional and contemporary jazz elements with Panamanian rhythms and sounds.

From the opening track "Rediscovery of the South Sea" to the celebratory finale "Celebration of Our Land," the album showcases Pérez's mastery of blending jazz improvisation with the rich musical traditions of Panama. Highlights include "The Canal Suite," a three-part exploration of the Panama Canal's significance, and "Abia Yala (America)," a tribute to the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

"Panama 500" is not just a musical celebration but also a historical and cultural narrative, weaving together the stories and sounds of Panama. Pérez's compositions are both intimate and expansive, reflecting the country's diverse landscapes and the resilience of its people. The album's standout tracks, such as "Gratitude" and "Panama Viejo," offer poignant reflections on the past and present, while "Celebration of Our Land" brings the album to a triumphant close.
