Pala - Friendly Fires

Product description

"Pala," the second studio album from British alternative dance band Friendly Fires, is a vibrant and infectious journey through the realms of new rave and indie dance. Released on May 16, 2011, via XL Recordings, this 44-minute masterpiece is a testament to the band's ability to craft giant choruses, relatable lyrics, and a plethora of earworm riffs that will have you humming along in no time.

The album kicks off with "Live Those Days Tonight," a track that sets the tone for the rest of the record with its romantic electro-gaze textures and big, cheesy gestures. From there, "Pala" takes you on a whirlwind of sounds, from the nostalgic "Blue Cassette" to the upbeat "Running Away" and the dreamy "Hawaiian Air." Each song is a unique blend of synths, drums, and vocals that come together to create a cohesive and captivating listening experience.

Friendly Fires' signature sound is on full display throughout "Pala," with tracks that sip pina coladas, gaze into sunsets, and adopt Kajagoogoo-gooey harmonies and descending Syndrum patterns. The album's lyrics are equally engaging, with lines like "See a crack in the sky / Catch the sun as it folds / Swim the waves in your eyes" from "Pala" painting vivid images that will stay with you long after the music has stopped.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Friendly Fires or a newcomer to their music, "Pala" is sure to become a staple in your music collection. With its infectious beats, relatable lyrics, and unforgettable riffs, this album is a must-listen for anyone who loves great music. So, grab your headphones, turn up the volume, and get ready to dance the night away with "Pala."

This 2LP set was released in 2011.

How do we keep reviews authentic?

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Vinyl Outshines Digital

    5 out of 5 stars
    Vorbah_XudfJanuary 15, 2026United States🇺🇸

I'm not on the same page as the other reviews here. Honestly, it feels a bit warmer than the digital version. The bass is also more impressive on vinyl. It's not a poorly pressed record, it's just a badly recorded album, sadly. I'm definitely keeping the vinyl copy.

  • Vinyl's Warmer, Better Bass

    5 out of 5 stars
    Jucqup_QojjNovember 2, 2025United States🇺🇸

Contrary to other reviews, I find it a tad warmer than the digital version. The bass is indeed more impressive on vinyl. It's not a poorly pressed record, but rather a badly recorded album. I'm definitely keeping the vinyl copy.

  • Vinyl's Bass Better, Album Flawed

    5 out of 5 stars
    Moscuf_KiyvMay 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm not on the same page as the other reviews. Truth be told, it's a tad warmer than the digital version. The bass is also more impressive on vinyl. It's not a poorly pressed record, it's just a badly recorded album, sadly. I'm definitely keeping the vinyl copy.

  • Rare Album Finds Hope

    5 out of 5 stars
    Jiydesmm-VidvJanuary 28, 2025United States🇺🇸

This month, a few fresh, unopened copies of this album popped up on eBay. Juno had one available, along with a couple of other sellers. I decided to snag a copy, and it appears to match my original pressing, though I haven't opened it just yet. I was curious if it might be a repress, but all the copies seem to have sold out, and I can't find any more info online. The XL Recordings site doesn't mention anything, so they might have been some old stock. Really hoping they release a single disc version!

  • New Album Copies Resurface

    5 out of 5 stars
    Tiljuqhh-LobpJanuary 28, 2025United States🇺🇸

This month, a few brand new, still-sealed copies of this album popped up on eBay. Juno had one available, along with a couple of other sellers. I went ahead and ordered a copy, and it appears to be identical to my original pressing, though I haven't opened it just yet. I was curious if it might be a repress, but all the copies seem to have sold out now, and I can't find any more information online. The XL Recordings website doesn't mention anything about it, so maybe they were just some old stock. Really hoping they release a single disc version someday!

About Friendly Fires

Friendly Fires, hailing from St Albans, Hertfordshire, are an English indie rock trio known for their infectious blend of new rave and indie dance sounds. Formed in 2006, the band—comprising Ed MacFarlane, Edd Gibson, and Jack Savidge—burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in 2008, which was shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize. Their music is characterized by its energetic beats and synth-driven melodies, earning them both commercial success and critical acclaim. After a seven-year hiatus, Friendly Fires returned with their third album, "Inflorescent," in 2019, showcasing their enduring talent and cementing their status as leaders in the 80s revivalist genre. With a discography that includes hits like "Paris," Friendly Fires continue to captivate audiences with their dynamic live performances and innovative studio recordings.
