Absolutely fantastic! Spotless with tons of detail. I can't picture a better release. It feels like the musicians are performing right in front of me. The audio is incredibly Wide, deep, and rich. Yet another KG triumph!
This album is truly fantastic. I own the Classic Records version in mono and the BN CD in stereo. This afternoon, I had a comparison session with four friends, pitting the Tone Poet and Classic editions against each other. Out of all of us, every single person favored the Classic edition over the Tone Poet. We used a Miyajima Infinity mono and Lyra Etna stereo cartridges for the test. When I asked the others why they preferred the Classic, they couldn't quite put their finger on it. I suspect it might be due to the mono recording's lack of extreme panning and perhaps its smoother overall sound. Does anyone know if this album was recorded in both mono and stereo on tape? I believe this was around the time when they started phasing out mono recordings and focusing solely on stereo. It would be amazing to see more Sonny Red reissues, like "Images," hit the shelves.
I was really enjoying the sound quality of this record until I turned it over to the second side. There are multiple instances of crackling noises throughout. Some are inaudible but many others have loud popping sounds, especially irritating in the quiet parts. I'd suggest trying for a replacement.
The initial copy I got had really noticeable ticks throughout the whole of side one, from beginning to end. The replacement copy, though, was flawless and wow, what an amazing record this is! Sonny Red has such a cool, relaxed style and a huge warm, sweet sound. Wynton Kelly is fantastic and Sam Jones and Roy Brooks on bass and drums respectively make the music swing all the way through (swapped out on the last two tracks by Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb). The mastering is top-notch, the sound is superb, and it's a great pressing, so it was definitely worth the trouble and wait to get a replacement copy. Another excellent Tone Poet.
incredible. superb recording, awesome bluesy chill jazz- instantly became one of my top favourites.
