Product description

Immerse yourself in the profound and introspective world of Othmar Schoeck's "Elegie, Op. 36," a masterful song cycle that stands as a testament to the composer's deep musical and poetic sensibilities. Composed between 1921 and 1923, this collection of 24 songs for baritone and chamber orchestra is Schoeck's first song cycle, showcasing his unique ability to blend rich orchestration with deeply evocative poetry.

This album, released on March 27, 2015, under the Jecklin label, features the stunning performances of the Berner Kammerensemble, with Theo Hug on baritone, and Arthur Loosli conducting. The 56-minute duration is filled with a series of elegies that explore themes of love, loss, and the passage of time, each song a poignant reflection on the human condition.

From the melancholic "Wehmut" to the resolute "Herbstentschluss," Schoeck's "Elegie, Op. 36" is a journey through the seasons of the soul. The cycle includes notable tracks such as "Liebesfrühling," "Waldlied," and "Herbstklage," each bringing a unique perspective to the overarching narrative of life's fleeting moments and enduring memories.

Othmar Schoeck's "Elegie, Op. 36" is not just a collection of songs but a deeply personal and artistic exploration of life's complexities. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Schoeck's work, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the composer's mastery of form and expression.

About Othmar Schoeck

Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957) was a prominent Swiss composer and conductor, celebrated for his contributions to the late-Romantic era. Born in Brunnen, Schoeck's musical journey was marked by a deep commitment to the art song, or lied, with over 400 songs to his credit. His compositions span a wide range of genres, including operas, choral works, and orchestral pieces, each imbued with a sensuous and stringent style that reflects his German-Austrian influences. Schoeck studied under Max Reger and conducted various choral societies and symphonies throughout his career. Despite his significant contributions, Schoeck remains relatively unknown outside of Switzerland, adding an air of discovery to his music. His works, now increasingly popular, offer a rich exploration of the human experience, making them a captivating addition to any music lover's collection.
