Product description

Donovan's 1970 release, Open Road, is a captivating blend of folk rock and psychedelic rock that showcases the artist's unique sound. Released on 7 September 1970 through Legacy Recordings, this 41-minute album takes listeners on a musical journey through a diverse range of tracks. From the opening notes of 'Changes' to the final strains of 'New Year's Resolution', Donovan's distinctive voice and style weave a spell that is both haunting and uplifting.

The album's tracklist is a testament to Donovan's eclectic approach, with songs like 'Curry Land' and 'Riki Tiki Tavi' showcasing his ability to craft infectious, psychedelic-tinged rock, while 'Song for John' and 'Season of Farewell' demonstrate a more introspective, folk-influenced side. The inclusion of 'Celtic Rock' and 'Roots of Oak' adds a further layer of depth, highlighting Donovan's fascination with traditional music and his skill in incorporating these elements into his own unique sound.

With Open Road, Donovan has created an album that is at once a reflection of his own artistic vision and a product of its time, capturing the spirit of a bygone era while remaining remarkably fresh and relevant today. As a result, this album is a must-listen for fans of folk rock and psychedelic rock, and a fascinating discovery for those new to Donovan's music.

This LP is housed in a gatefold.

  • CD Mastery Triumphs

This CD sounds absolutely fantastic! It's been mastered from the original stereo tapes by Josep Umbria, and it's truly amazing. When a compact disc sounds this incredible, who needs vinyl?

  • Underappreciated Masterpiece Album

    5 out of 5 stars

It's absolutely shocking how underappreciated this album is! I mean, it's almost criminal how often it's ignored. This is a genuine masterpiece and a brilliant example of crafting catchy, original material that even influenced Bowie's glam era. There's not a single weak track here. It's no surprise that this one tops his best work. It stands right alongside his mid to late 60s stuff. The vinyl pressing is also fantastic, dynamic, transparent, and full of depth. I can't praise this album and its original press enough. At $5 to $20, depending on condition, you can't make a bad choice.

  • Open Road's Celtic Rock Triumph

    5 out of 5 stars
    YgCevueJanuary 31, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm a huge fan of HURDY GURDY MAN and BARABAJAGAL, but OPEN ROAD stands out as my top Donovan album. It often gets overshadowed, which is a real pity, because it's packed with fantastic tracks. "Celtic Rock" is one of the song titles, and it perfectly captures the essence of this whole album. I also appreciate how it feels like a band performance, not just Donovan with a bunch of session musicians. Every song is great, although "Joe Bean's Theme" feels a bit out of sync with the rest. The sound quality of this pressing is excellent, it's by far the best sounding album in Donovan's discography up to this point, with deep bass, rich harmonies, and a full, warm sound. I've owned this copy for around 35 years, and taken good care of it - it still plays crystal clear with hardly any surface noise.
