About Mildred Bailey

Mildred Bailey, born Mildred Rinker on February 27, 1907, in Tekoa, Washington, was a pioneering Native American jazz singer who left an indelible mark on the music world during the 1930s and beyond. Known as "The Queen of Swing," "The Rockin' Chair Lady," and "Mrs. Swing," Bailey was celebrated for her light soprano voice, impeccable articulation, and innovative jazz phrasing. She was the first female big-band vocalist and is credited with introducing the technique of singing ahead of and behind the beat. Her influence was profound, with even legendary collaborators noting her exceptional talent. Bailey's music spans vocal jazz, swing, big band, ragtime, and jazz, making her a versatile and enduring figure in the genre.
