Product description

"On The Way To Two" is a captivating duet album featuring the masterful interplay between legendary trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and renowned pianist John Taylor. Recorded in March 2005 at the prestigious Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany, this album is a testament to the deep musical connection and mutual respect between these two jazz giants. The album showcases a blend of free jazz, big band, and traditional jazz elements, all seamlessly woven into a tapestry of sound that is both innovative and timeless.

The album features ten tracks, including original compositions and improvisations, each offering a unique perspective on the duo's collaborative genius. From the opening notes of "Canter 2" to the delicate beauty of "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing," the album is a journey through the rich landscapes of jazz, with complex themes alternating with shorter, more introspective pieces. Wheeler's trumpet and flugelhorn work is complemented perfectly by Taylor's piano, creating a harmonious balance that is both dynamic and intimate.

"On The Way To Two" is not just an album; it's a celebration of the enduring partnership between Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor, two of the most influential figures in modern jazz. The album was recorded during a period of significant creativity for Wheeler, who had been actively recording on the CAM Jazz label since 2004, often in collaboration with Taylor. This album stands as a poignant tribute to Wheeler, who passed away in 2014, and to Taylor, who also left a lasting legacy in the world of jazz. The album's release in 2005 marked the first anniversary of Wheeler's death, adding a layer of significance to this already remarkable collection of music.

The album's recording quality is top-notch, with each note and nuance captured in stunning detail. The performances are a testament to the artists' skill and the producers' attention to detail, ensuring that every listener can appreciate the depth and complexity of the music. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "On The Way To Two" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the best of what jazz has to offer.

This LP was released in 2016.

About Kenny Wheeler

Kenny Wheeler, born in Toronto in 1930, was a Canadian composer and trumpeter who made a significant impact on the jazz scene, particularly in the UK, where he resided from the 1950s until his passing in 2014. Known for his versatility and adventurous spirit, Wheeler's music spanned various genres, including free jazz, big band, and even rock. His compositions, over a hundred in total, showcased his sophisticated and melodic style, often blending post-bop influences with avant-garde elements. Wheeler collaborated with numerous jazz greats, such as Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland, and Evan Parker, and his work as a bandleader and sideman resulted in a prolific discography. His distinctive sound on the trumpet and flugelhorn, coupled with his skill as an arranger, made him a leading figure in European jazz. Wheeler's legacy continues to inspire, with recent releases breathing new life into his previously unrecorded music.
