Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Jacques Offenbach's "Hoffmanns Erzählungen - Highlights," a captivating collection of excerpts from his final operatic masterpiece, "Les Contes d'Hoffmann." Released on May 2, 1962, by Deutsche Grammophon, this album offers a tantalizing glimpse into the whimsical and tragic tales of the romantic poet Hoffmann, as he recounts his three ill-fated love affairs.

With a stellar cast featuring Thomas Stewart as the baritone, Sándor Kónya as the tenor, and Mattiwilda Dobbs as the soprano, the album brings to life the dramatic and melodic richness of Offenbach's score. The orchestral accompaniment by the Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin, conducted by Pierre Michel Leconte, adds depth and nuance to each performance.

The album spans 53 minutes, showcasing 17 highlights from the opera, sung in German. From the lively and humorous "Aus dem Keller kommt hervor, Geister des Weines!" to the poignant and romantic "Meine Geliebte!" and "Schöne Nacht, du Liebesnacht," each track offers a unique perspective on Hoffmann's colorful and tumultuous life.

Offenbach's "Hoffmanns Erzählungen - Highlights" is not just a collection of arias and ensembles; it's a journey through a world of fantasy, love, and loss. The album's historical significance as Offenbach's final opera adds an extra layer of intrigue, making it a fascinating exploration of the composer's artistic legacy. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a delightful and engaging listening experience.

About Jacques Offenbach

Jacques Offenbach, born in Cologne in 1819 and later naturalized as a French citizen, was a prolific composer and cellist whose name is synonymous with the operetta genre. Often hailed as the "father of operetta," Offenbach's nearly 100 operettas, composed between the 1850s and 1870s, are celebrated for their wit, charm, and musical innovation. His works, such as "Orphée aux enfers" and "La Belle Hélène," are known for their satirical take on contemporary society and their catchy melodies. Offenbach's influence extended far beyond his lifetime, shaping the future of musical theater and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music. His compositions continue to be performed and enjoyed today, a testament to their enduring appeal.
