New Values - Iggy Pop

Product description

Iggy Pop's third solo studio album, New Values, is a seminal work that marked a new chapter in the musician's career. Released in September 1979 on Arista Records, this album signalled a fresh start for Iggy Pop, as it was his first record for the label and his first collaboration with James Williamson since their work on Kill City. The album also saw Iggy Pop reunite with multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston, resulting in a strong collection of songs that showcases the artist's unique performance art.

New Values features a diverse range of tracks, including the storytelling of 'Tell Me a Story', the rebellious spirit of 'I'm Bored', and the catchy hooks of 'Five Foot One'. With Williamson's production allowing Iggy Pop's talent to take centre stage, the album is a testament to the musician's ability to craft compelling and energetic songs. The tracklist is rounded out by other notable tracks such as 'Don't Look Down', 'Girls', and 'Pretty Flamingo', demonstrating Iggy Pop's mastery of proto-punk and glam rock.

Clocking in at 45 minutes, New Values is an album that is both concise and impactful. Iggy Pop's collaboration with James Williamson has resulted in an album that is quintessentially Iggy Pop, with his distinctive voice and style shining through on every track. As the first of a three-album deal with Arista Records, New Values set the tone for Iggy Pop's future work and cemented his status as a pioneer of punk rock. With its blend of catchy hooks, rebellious spirit, and performance art, New Values is an essential listen for fans of Iggy Pop and anyone interested in the proto-punk and glam rock genres.

This is a 2025 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Iggy Pop's Raw Gem

    4 out of 5 stars
    heyix_dkooyeg2826November 4, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm torn between this album and "The Idiot" when it comes to my favorite Iggy Pop record, as both are phenomenal yet distinctly unique. This one's far more refined and laid-back compared to the previous two (excluding "Kill City"). James Williamson's production is top-notch, though it's intentionally raw—no reverb or effects, just a stark, dry sound that somehow works perfectly. I've owned the same copy for nearly a decade, and the story behind it cracks me up. Back in 2016, my parents and I visited Denver, and my dad and I stopped by a comic book shop. Outside, a homeless guy was selling records (or maybe he'd swiped them, who knows?). We picked up this album, a Clash compilation, a beat-up copy of The Beatles' "Let It Be," and possibly a promo of Willie Nile's debut. I've never spotted another original copy since, which makes my purchase even funnier. The tracks here are fantastic. The first four could easily stand alone as an EP, they're that good. "5 Foot 1" is another standout for me. Every other song is brilliant, though "African Man" weirdly makes me squirm for some reason. Still, the songwriting is excellent and perfectly captures the era. So, if you come across a copy, grab it. You might not buy it from a homeless guy, but you won't regret the purchase.

  • Vinyl Impressive, Track Offensive

    2 out of 5 stars
    xelmodzuqjfezuecJuly 25, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

First off, I'd give 5 stars for the audio quality and the cool vinyl color design. Really blown away by this company. The Willie Nelson - Yesterday's Wine release also sounded and looked amazing. The rating drops for the track "African Man". Honestly, what more can be said about that song that hasn't been already? It's so incredibly offensive and wrong on so many levels; if he hasn't apologized yet, he really should. That song totally ruins the whole album for me, but apart from that, it sounds great but not quite as legendary as the first 3 Stooges albums (no joke).

  • Stunning Audio Clarity

    5 out of 5 stars
    LEgsOLqUhAMay 9, 2024United States🇺🇸

Wow, Suzy, the audio quality is absolutely stunning. It's like high-definition sound! The clarity is top-notch, with drums that pack a serious punch, vocals that are crystal clear, and guitars that cut through beautifully. The overall sound is big and bold. The pressing is super quiet too, no issues at all. "The Endless Sea" is a standout track, really enjoyable.

About Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg Jr. in 1947, is a titan of rock music, often hailed as the "Godfather of Punk." As the frontman of the proto-punk band The Stooges, formed in 1967, Iggy Pop pioneered a raw, energetic sound that laid the groundwork for the punk movement. His stage antics, characterized by wild abandon and provocative performances, have become legendary, cementing his status as a true rock icon. With a career spanning over five decades, Iggy Pop has released a prolific discography of solo work and Stooges albums, earning him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Beyond music, Iggy Pop has also made a name for himself as an actor, appearing in films like "Coffee and Cigarettes" and "Dead Man." His influence extends far beyond his music, inspiring generations of artists with his unapologetic attitude and boundary-pushing creativity.
