Settled on the couch in 2020, grooving to Gerry and Art Farmer's (trumpet) tunes, backed by Bill Crow (bass) and Dave Bailey (drums) from their sessions on Dec 17 & Dec 23, 1958. Side 1 is all from JANUARY 15, 1959. Columbia records boasted on the jacket, "Guaranteed hi-fidelity." Yeah, there's some pops 'n' crackles, but the liner motes wrap up with, " In short, you can buy this record without worrying it'll be outdated in the future." My Funny Valentine, slow and thoughtful, showcases how Farmer's trumpet, with just a touch of fingerings and breathing, speaks volumes, while Gerry's reed and pads blend in to create a mournful tune. The plucked bass strings and gently placed high hat, a super subtle brush on the snare, with a soft bass drum to finish, transports a listener right back to those winter days of mid-century modern jazz. This little quartet truly shines, upbeat and downbeat.
I must say, this was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't familiar with this artist or the quartet. Picked it up with some other jazz tracks and wow, I'd set my price at 'make me part with it'—this album is genuinely fantastic and the sound quality is impressive too.
Incredible sound quality for audiophiles... Don't miss out and get it while you can...
This is a fantastic pressing of a superb album. The instruments sound like they're right there with you in the room.
This album is absolutely phenomenal. The quality of the mastering and pressing is right up there with the finest Audiophile Pressings and Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab records I own.
