Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical piano with Walter Gieseking's masterful rendition of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488, and Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54. Released on December 9, 2022, by Warner Classics, this album showcases Gieseking's unparalleled artistry and the Philharmonia Orchestra's exquisite accompaniment.

The album opens with Mozart's enchanting Piano Concerto No. 23, featuring a captivating cadenza composed by Gieseking himself. The concerto's three movements—Allegro, Adagio, and Allegro assai—are performed with a delicate balance of technical precision and emotional depth, highlighting Gieseking's unique interpretive style. The Adagio, in particular, is a standout, offering a moment of serene reflection amidst the concerto's lively passages.

Following Mozart's concerto is Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54. This romantic masterpiece is brought to life with Gieseking's expressive playing and the Philharmonia Orchestra's rich, resonant sound. The concerto's three movements—Allegro affettuoso - Andante espressivo, Intermezzo. Andantino grazioso, and Allegro vivace—are performed with a sense of drama and nuance that showcases Gieseking's deep understanding of Schumann's musical language.

With a total runtime of 56 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the works of Mozart and Schumann, as well as a testament to Walter Gieseking's enduring legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Walter Gieseking

Walter Gieseking, born in Lyon, France, in 1895, was a prodigious and intuitive pianist whose career spanned the early 20th century, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music world. Recognized for his subtle touch, exquisite pedaling, and masterful dynamic control, Gieseking's interpretations of works by Classical, Romantic, and early 20th-century composers, particularly Debussy and Ravel, are legendary. His extensive recordings, including nearly all of Mozart's solo piano works and the complete published works of Debussy and Ravel available during his lifetime, showcase his extraordinary talent and deep musical insight.

Gieseking's journey began at the age of four when he started playing the piano, quickly making remarkable progress. By 1911, he was studying under the renowned Karl Leimer. His career took off with prolific recording sessions for the German Homochord label between 1923 and 1927, establishing him as one of the most extraordinary pianists of his time.

Beyond his musical prowess, Gieseking was also a composer, adding another dimension to his artistic legacy. His life, however, was marked by tragedy when, in 1955, he and his wife were involved in a bus accident that claimed her life and left him with serious head injuries. Despite this personal loss, Gieseking's contributions to the world of classical piano remain celebrated, making him a timeless figure in the annals of music history.
