Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of American musical heritage with Jerome Moross's compelling album, "Frankie and Johnny / Those Everlasting Blues." Released in 2002 under the Naxos label, this collection is a vibrant fusion of classical and jazz elements, showcasing Moross's unique ability to blend genres seamlessly.

The album features the ballet "Frankie and Johnny," a groundbreaking work that is often hailed as the first truly "American" ballet, both in form and content. Moross's score is deeply rooted in African American jazz, incorporating a variety of styles including a stomp, the blues, rags, a foxtrot, and a one-step. This diversity of musical influences creates a dynamic and engaging listening experience that highlights the cultural richness of the era.

In addition to the ballet, the album includes the world premiere of "Those Everlasting Blues," a piece that further showcases Moross's mastery of blending classical and jazz traditions. The album also features "Willie the Weeper," a series of musical vignettes that explore different facets of the character Willie, each with its own distinct musical style and mood.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 3 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive journey through Moross's innovative compositions. Whether you're a fan of classical music, jazz, or simply appreciate well-crafted musical storytelling, "Frankie and Johnny / Those Everlasting Blues" is a must-listen that highlights the enduring legacy of Jerome Moross.

About Jerome Moross

Jerome Moross, born in Brooklyn in 1913, was a prodigious American composer whose musical journey began at the tender age of five when he started playing the piano. By eight, he was already composing his own pieces, showcasing a talent that would later define his illustrious career. Moross's versatility as a composer is evident in his extensive work across film, television, Broadway, and symphonic music. He is perhaps best known for his Oscar-nominated score for the epic Western film "The Big Country," a work that revolutionized the sound of Western movie scores and continues to influence the genre today. Beyond his film work, Moross composed for the stage, including the Broadway musical "Golden Apples," and created symphonic and chamber pieces that, though sometimes overlooked, are integral to his legacy. His innovative approach to music, blending folk and jazz elements, made his compositions uniquely American and always fresh. Moross's contributions to the world of music are a testament to his enduring talent and creative vision.
