Product description

Dive into the world of avant-garde jazz with Han Bennink's "Monk Vol. 1," a captivating exploration of Thelonious Monk's compositions reimagined through the lens of free jazz. Released on October 20, 2008, under the GPmusic label, this album is a testament to Bennink's virtuosity as a drummer and his ability to push the boundaries of traditional jazz.

Joined by Michiel Borstlap on piano and Ernst Glerum on bass, Bennink delivers a dynamic and unpredictable performance that spans 58 minutes across 12 tracks. From the opening notes of "Four in One" to the closing melodies of "Ask Me Now," each piece is a journey through the intricate and often unconventional compositions of Monk, rendered with a fresh and innovative approach.

The trio's chemistry is palpable, with each musician contributing to a sound that is both cohesive and exploratory. Bennink's drumming is a standout, driving the music forward with a relentless energy that is characteristic of his style. Borstlap's piano work is equally impressive, adding layers of complexity and depth to each track, while Glerum's bass provides a solid foundation that grounds the music in its jazz roots.

"Monk Vol. 1" is not just a tribute to Thelonious Monk but a celebration of the enduring influence of his music. It is a must-listen for fans of jazz, particularly those with a taste for the avant-garde. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a unique and engaging listening experience that showcases the brilliance of Han Bennink and his collaborators.

About Han Bennink

Han Bennink is a pioneering Dutch drummer and multi-instrumentalist, born in 1942 in Zaandam, near Amsterdam. Known for his innovative approach to free jazz and avant-garde music, Bennink's journey began with humble beginnings, using a kitchen chair as his first percussion instrument at the age of five. His career took off in the mid-1960s, where he became one of the key figures in European free music. Bennink's versatility extends beyond the drum kit, as he has been known to play a variety of instruments including soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, trombone, violin, banjo, and piano. His playful and improvisational style has earned him accolades such as the Jazzahead-Skoda-Award, recognising his outstanding contributions to the jazz world. Bennink's music is not just about the notes; it's about the experience, the spontaneity, and the sheer joy of creation.
