Fantastic album. When Bud comes in on side 2, it's a game-changer.
Monk & the gang have done it again, this time with a stereo twist that really lets each instrument shine. The mastering and pressing are top-notch, as usual...
This late-80s CD boasts fantastic sound quality, though the mix has a very "live" feel -- Johnny Griffin clearly prioritized his performance over perfect mic positioning. The saxophone and piano shine through, while the bass and drums are somewhat tucked in the background. Monk's playing is focused, right on top of the beat, driving the band and relishing his solo moments; Griffin is absolutely on fire, delivering scorching leads that stand out. The iconic Monk themes sound rejuvenated on piano, more restrained and contemplative than on the brassy studio recordings. The bonus tracks are a real treat.
Kevin Gray's latest track might just be the coziest sounding one I've come across... crystal clear and with that perfect sonic distinction. Absolutely worth a listen!
