About Tomás Bretón

Tomás Bretón y Hernández, born in Salamanca on December 29, 1850, was a prominent Spanish conductor and composer who rose from humble beginnings to become a leading figure in Spanish music. Throughout his life, Bretón made significant contributions to the world of music, particularly through his zarzuelas, which are Spanish lyric dramas. His most renowned work, "La Verbena de la Paloma" (1893), remains a celebrated piece in the genre. As the director of the Madrid Conservatory, Bretón also played a crucial role in shaping the musical landscape of Spain during the late 19th century. His compositions continue to captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Spain. Bretón passed away on December 2, 1923, leaving behind a legacy that endures in the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide.
