Product description

Michel Camilo's self-titled album, released on November 1, 1988, under the Columbia label, is a vibrant fusion of Latin jazz, flamenco, and big band sounds that showcases the artist's exceptional piano skills and innovative compositions. Spanning just 44 minutes, this album is a testament to Camilo's versatility and mastery of various jazz genres.

The album opens with the captivating "Suite Sandrine Part 1," setting the stage for a journey through a diverse range of musical styles. Tracks like "Nostalgia" and "Dreamlight" highlight Camilo's ability to blend jazz fusion with Latin rhythms, creating a rich and dynamic soundscape. "Crossroads" and "Sunset" offer a more introspective mood, while "Yarey" and "Pra Voce" bring in elements of Latin and Brazilian influences, respectively.

The album also features a rendition of "Blue Bossa," a classic jazz standard, showcasing Camilo's ability to reinterpret well-known pieces with his unique style. The final track, "Caribe," brings the album to a close with a lively and infectious Latin groove.

Michel Camilo's eponymous album is a celebration of jazz in all its forms, blending traditional and contemporary elements to create a sound that is both timeless and innovative. Whether you're a longtime fan of Michel Camilo or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to impress with its virtuoso performances and imaginative compositions.

This is an amazing jazz-dance album that's seriously underappreciated, a must for Gilles Peterson enthusiasts! All tracks are originals by Camilo, a stunning hidden gem from a major label in the late 80s. It's quite scarce, not something you come across every day, but it's absolutely worth seeking out! :)

  • Latin Jazz Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars

Oh, this is an absolutely fantastic album (be it LP or CD) that'll make your ears perk up and your feet tap along! I challenge you to stay seated while enjoying this marvelous Latin jazz performance. Michael Camilo's keyboard skills are simply breathtaking, and the percussion work is gorgeous! You're bound to adore this music and the stellar performance by Michael and his incredibly gifted bandmates Dave Weckl, Joel Rosenblatt, Lincoln Goins, Marc Johnson, and Mongo Santamaria (though his last name's spelled Santamaris on the LP's sticker). I don't usually review music, but this one deserved my words!
