Product description

Experience the resurgence of a musical treasure with Giacomo Meyerbeer's "Jephtas Gelübde," a captivating opera that marks the composer's inaugural foray into the world of music drama. Originally penned in 1812, this biblical epic, based on the story of Jephthah, has been meticulously restored and recorded, offering a unique glimpse into Meyerbeer's early genius.

The opera, with a libretto by Aloys Wilhelm Schreiber, unfolds over three acts, each brimming with a rich tapestry of vocal and orchestral compositions. The narrative, steeped in themes of faith, sacrifice, and love, is brought to life by a stellar cast, including Sönke Tams Freier as Jephta, Andrea Chudak as Sulima, and Marcus Elsäßer as Asmavett. Their performances, coupled with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Dario Salvi, deliver a powerful and nuanced interpretation of Meyerbeer's varied and expressive musical language.

Recorded at the Bulgaria Hall in July 2019, this two-disc set is a testament to the enduring power of Meyerbeer's composition. The album, released on the Marco Polo label, spans a duration of 2 hours and 36 minutes, encompassing 31 tracks that encapsulate the opera's dramatic arc. From the stirring overture to the poignant finales, each track is a testament to Meyerbeer's masterful storytelling and musical prowess.

"Jephtas Gelübde" is not just a historical artifact but a vibrant, engaging opera that resonates with contemporary audiences. The album's meticulous production and the cast's compelling performances make it an essential addition to any opera enthusiast's collection. Dive into the world of Meyerbeer's early opera and experience the timeless allure of "Jephtas Gelübde."

About Giacomo Meyerbeer

Giacomo Meyerbeer, born Jacob Liebmann Beer, was a German opera composer who rose to become one of the most celebrated and influential figures in 19th-century music. Hailing from a wealthy Jewish family in Prussia, Meyerbeer's journey took him through Italy and France, where he honed his craft and adopted his stage name. He is renowned for pioneering the grand opera genre, blending German orchestral style with Italian vocal traditions to create spectacular, melodramatic works that captivated audiences. His collaborations with librettist Eugène Scribe resulted in iconic operas like "Robert le diable," "Les Huguenots," and "Le prophète," which set the standard for Parisian opera and solidified the city's reputation as the opera capital of the world. Meyerbeer's innovations and dramatic flair left an indelible mark on the operatic landscape, influencing composers such as Richard Wagner and solidifying his legacy as a bridge between the classical and romantic eras.
