Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Felix Mendelssohn's orchestral masterpieces with this captivating album, released on LSO Live on September 9, 2016. This collection showcases two of Mendelssohn's most celebrated symphonies, the Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 11, and the Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, affectionately known as the "Italian."

The album opens with Mendelssohn's first symphony, a work that reveals the young composer's burgeoning genius. The first movement, "Allegro di molto," bursts with energy and drama, while the second movement, "Andante," offers a moment of introspective beauty. The third movement presents a fascinating comparison between the 1829 London version and the 1824 original, showcasing Mendelssohn's evolving style. The symphony concludes with the exhilarating "Allegro con fuoco."

The second half of the album is dedicated to the "Italian" Symphony, inspired by Mendelssohn's travels through the picturesque landscapes of Italy. The first movement, "Allegro vivace," is a lively and vibrant overture, followed by the graceful "Andante con moto." The third movement, "Menuetto," is a charming interlude, leading to the spirited finale, "Saltarello. Presto," which brings the symphony to a thrilling close.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 2 minutes, this album is a treasure trove of classical music, perfect for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to Mendelssohn's work. The performances are brought to life by the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of renowned conductor Sir Colin Davis, offering a rich and immersive listening experience. Whether you're in the mood for the dramatic intensity of the first symphony or the sunny charm of the "Italian," this album is sure to delight.

About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
