Product description

Immerse yourself in the intricate and evocative world of William Mathias' string quartets with the album "MATHIAS, W.: The 3 String Quartets." Released on April 1, 2013, under the Métier label, this collection showcases the brilliance of the Welsh composer's work, performed exquisitely by the Medea Quartet. Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 3 minutes, the album features three complete string quartets, each offering a unique blend of emotional depth and technical mastery.

Mathias, born in 1934 and passing away in 1992, was a prolific composer whose works have left an indelible mark on the classical music landscape. His string quartets, in particular, are celebrated for their rich harmonies, dynamic contrasts, and profound expressiveness. The album opens with String Quartet No. 1, Op. 38, followed by the four movements of String Quartet No. 2, Op. 84, and concludes with the three movements of String Quartet No. 3, Op. 97. Each piece is a testament to Mathias' ability to weave complex musical narratives that captivate and inspire.

The Medea Quartet's performance brings out the full range of emotions and technical brilliance in these compositions. From the allegro movements that spark with energy to the lento passages that resonate with deep sentiment, the quartet's interpretation is both nuanced and powerful. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a compelling journey through the mind and heart of one of the 20th century's most gifted composers.
