Product description

Dive into the vibrant world of hard bop with Ricky Ford's "Manhattan Blues," a captivating album released in 1989 on the Candid label. This nine-track journey, recorded in a single day at the iconic A & R Studios in New York City, showcases Ford's mastery of the tenor saxophone alongside an all-star rhythm section featuring the legendary Jaki Byard on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Ben Riley on drums.

"Manhattan Blues" is a testament to Ford's deep roots in jazz tradition and his innovative spirit. The album opens with "In Walked Bud," a tribute to the incomparable Bud Powell, and continues with a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of classics like "Misty." Ford's compositions, such as "Ode to Crispus Attucks" and "Land Preserved," pay homage to historical figures and environmental themes, adding a layer of depth to the music.

The album's title track, "Manhattan Blues," captures the essence of New York City's jazz scene, while "Bop Nouveau" and "My Little Strayhorn" showcase Ford's playful and inventive approach to composition. With a total runtime of just over an hour, "Manhattan Blues" is a rich and rewarding listen, offering a blend of technical virtuosity, emotional resonance, and infectious grooves. Whether you're a longtime fan of hard bop or a newcomer to the genre, Ricky Ford's "Manhattan Blues" is an essential addition to your jazz collection.

This LP was released in 1989.
