Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich and diverse musical landscape of Malcolm Williamson's "Epitaphs," a captivating orchestral journey released on August 7, 2009, under the ABC Classic label. This album is a testament to Williamson's exceptional compositional prowess, offering a blend of intricate suites, concertante works, and evocative overtures that showcase his unique voice in the classical music realm.

The album opens with the "Our Man in Havana - Orchestral Suite," a five-movement work that weaves together Cuban rhythms, poignant melodies, and dramatic passages. Following this, the "Sinfonia Concertante" presents a three-movement exploration of contrast and harmony, highlighting Williamson's ability to craft compelling dialogues between instruments.

The "Santiago de Espada - Overture for Orchestra" serves as a dynamic interlude, leading into the "Sinfonietta," a three-part suite that ranges from the energetic "Toccata" to the mournful "Elegy," culminating in the lively "Tarantella." The album concludes with the "Epitaphs for Edith Sitwell," a pair of adagios that offer a reflective and introspective close to the collection.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes, "Epitaphs" is a substantial and rewarding listen, showcasing Malcolm Williamson's ability to create engaging and varied orchestral works. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album offers a rich and satisfying experience.

About Malcolm Williamson

Malcolm Williamson, AO, CBE (1931–2003), was an Australian composer of remarkable versatility and prolific output. Born in Sydney, Williamson's musical journey began at the age of 11 when he enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium for instrumental tuition, later delving into composition studies. His career took him to the United Kingdom, where he eventually became the Master of the Queen's Music from 1975 until his passing in 2003, making him the only non-British composer to hold this prestigious position.

Williamson's compositions are celebrated for their expansive dimensions, harmonic adventurousness, and intriguing, ever-shifting concepts. His works span a wide range of genres, including choral music, orchestral pieces, and concertos. Notable works include the "Williamson Overture," "Santiago de Espada," "Elevamini – Symphony No.1," and the "Sinfonia concertante for three trumpets, piano, and string orchestra." His choral music, in particular, is lauded for its depth and complexity.

Beyond his classical compositions, Williamson also contributed to film scores, including the haunting "The Masks of Death" from the Tyburn/Channel Four Television program and "The Horror of Frankenstein." His Piano Concerto No. 2 in F-Sharp Minor is another testament to his mastery of the form.

Williamson's legacy endures as a composer of astonishing facility, whose works continue to captivate audiences with their innovative spirit and emotional resonance.
