Product description

Dive into the rich tapestry of jazz history with "Mal 1 / Mal 2," a double album by the legendary Mal Waldron, released in 2012 by Universe Remasterings. This collection brings together two seminal works from the iconic pianist and composer, originally released in 1957, capturing the essence of hard bop, free jazz, and jazz blues.

"Mal 1," Waldron's debut as a leader, is a testament to his early genius, featuring a quintet that includes the likes of Gigi Gryce and Idrees Sulieman. Recorded in November 1956, this album showcases Waldron's unique compositional style and his mastery of the piano. Tracks like "Stablemates," "Yesterdays," and "Transfiguration" highlight his ability to blend intricate melodies with powerful improvisation.

"Mal 2," released later in 1957, offers a balanced mix of standards and original compositions, demonstrating Waldron's versatility. This album includes notable tracks such as "Don't Explain," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "Falling in Love With Love," each performed with Waldron's signature flair and depth.

Throughout these 14 tracks, spanning over an hour and 45 minutes, Waldron's virtuosity shines, making this album a quintessential addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Waldron or new to his music, "Mal 1 / Mal 2" offers a comprehensive journey through the evolution of his artistry, from his early days as a sideman to his emergence as a leading figure in the jazz world.
