This album's pop covers might not be the most exciting, but what makes it so desirable is Charles Stepney's production. Lewis's take on 'Les Fleur' is still impactful even without Minnie Ripperton's vocals, and Stepney's own track 'Ode' is definitely worth a listen, as is Lewis's rendition of Herbie Hancock's 'Maiden Voyage'.

Charles Stepney's work as a producer and arranger elevates this album to the status of a truly unique and extraordinary masterpiece, setting it apart from all of Ramsey Lewis' earlier works. Minnie Riperton's voice is employed almost like an otherworldly, heavenly-sounding instrument, and the orchestral arrangements are frequently creative and full of surprises. Standout tracks include the title track, "Les Fleur," and "Only When I'm Dreaming," while "Eternal Journey" serves as a breathtaking finale, delving into outright psychedelia. This 1968 stereo pressing boasts a robust bass, excellent range throughout, and a spacious, expansive soundstage. My copy plays back smoothly with just a hint of faint surface noise here and there.
