This Toro record is hands down my top pick from him (I've been a fan since "Causers Of This"). It's his most rock and psychedelic oriented work yet. When I spin it, it feels like an Unknown Mortal Orchestra record; (they even guest on track one… setting the vibe right from the start), the murky and lo-fi production is totally intentional. I'm all about artists who keep their discography fresh and diverse… it's pretty awesome that he's switching things up from his typical beats/electro indie sound and going for a 1970’s/early Tame Impala/UMO inspired vibe. Most artists start with rock and then shift to dance music… it's so refreshing that Toro is flipping the script and treating us to something unique and among his best work yet.
Man, this record is so quiet, it's practically silent. You gotta turn the volume up all the way, I'm not even joking. I was like, 'Is my amp broke or something?'
Quiet as a mouse and full of life, it's quite the shock considering it's VMP and GZ, and that most of my Dead Oceans records have a bit of hiss. Grab this one if you can. (Still on sale at VMP for regular price as of 06/06/2022, don't fall for the marked-up prices)
The sound quality on this is awful. It's all muddled & squashed throughout. Don't waste your cash, just listen to it online instead.
Great album - it's a bit of a musical mishmash, but the studio magic makes it all come together. The record's also top-notch - silent, crisp and with a real punch to it.
