Product description

György Cziffra, the renowned Hungarian pianist, delivers a captivating performance in this 2006 album, showcasing his virtuosity and deep understanding of the romantic piano repertoire. The album is a compelling blend of Franz Liszt's and Edvard Grieg's masterpieces, offering a rich and diverse listening experience.

The album opens with Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, a work that exemplifies Liszt's orchestral mastery and his innovative approach to piano composition. Cziffra's interpretation is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, bringing out the depth and nuance of Liszt's writing.

Following the concerto, the album delves into a series of Liszt's Études d'exécution transcendante, showcasing Cziffra's extraordinary technical prowess. These pieces, known for their difficulty and virtuosity, are performed with precision and artistry, highlighting Cziffra's exceptional skill.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor, a beloved work in the romantic piano concerto repertoire. Cziffra's interpretation is both lyrical and dramatic, capturing the essence of Grieg's musical language and the concerto's emotional depth.

In addition to these major works, the album also includes a selection of Liszt's paraphrases and transcriptions, demonstrating his genius for reimagining and transforming existing music. These pieces, performed with Cziffra's characteristic flair and sensitivity, provide a fascinating contrast to the concertos and études.

With a total duration of over two hours, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of the romantic piano repertoire, performed by one of the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About György Cziffra

György Cziffra, born in Budapest in 1921, was a Hungarian-French pianist renowned for his extraordinary virtuosity and unique interpretations. A protégé of Ernő Dohnányi, who studied under Liszt's favourite pupil, Cziffra's career spanned the postwar decades, leaving an indelible mark on the European classical music scene. His performances were nothing short of electrifying, often leaving critics awestruck and bewildered by his rapacious technique and profound musicality. Cziffra's repertoire was vast, but he was particularly celebrated for his renditions of Liszt and Chopin. His recordings, such as the complete works of Liszt on EMI France, offer a testament to his artistry and remain essential listening for classical piano enthusiasts. Cziffra passed away in 1994, but his legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century endures.
