Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical piano with John Ogdon's remarkable album, "Liszt: Concerto Pathétique; Schumann: Andante and Variations; Six studies for pedal piano." Released in 1973 under Universal Music Australia Pty. Ltd., this album is a testament to Ogdon's virtuosity and his deep connection with the romantic composers Liszt and Schumann.

The album opens with Liszt's "Concerto pathétique for 2 Pianos in E Minor," a piece that showcases Ogdon's technical brilliance and emotional depth. The three-movement concerto is a journey through a range of emotions, from the fiery passion of the first movement to the tender intimacy of the second, and finally, the triumphant energy of the third.

Following Liszt's concerto, the album presents Schumann's "Andante & Variations," a piece that highlights Ogdon's ability to convey the delicate nuances of Schumann's composition. The variations are a delightful exploration of different moods and characters, each one more engaging than the last.

The album concludes with six studies in canonical form by Schumann, arranged for two pianos by Debussy. These studies are a fascinating exploration of counterpoint and harmony, and Ogdon's performance is a masterclass in precision and control.

Throughout the album, Ogdon's playing is characterized by a deep understanding of the music and a commitment to expressing its emotional content. His performances are not just technically impressive; they are also deeply moving, drawing the listener in and holding their attention from start to finish.

Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire. John Ogdon's performances are a testament to the power of music to move and transform, and they are not to be missed.

About John Ogdon

John Ogdon, born in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, was a prodigious English pianist and composer whose life and career were marked by extraordinary talent and tragic circumstances. Born on 27 January 1937, Ogdon shared his birthday with Mozart, a coincidence that foreshadowed his own remarkable musical gifts. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where his prodigious abilities quickly became apparent.

Ogdon's career was characterised by his awe-inspiring natural talent, earning him a reputation as one of the most gifted British pianists of the 20th century. His performances were known for their depth and intensity, reflecting a genius that was both fragile and powerful. Despite his success, Ogdon's life was marked by personal struggles, making him one of the most tragic figures in British musical history.
