Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Kenneth Leighton's piano compositions with this exquisite album, released by Chandos in 2010. This collection showcases the breadth of Leighton's compositional career, spanning over three decades, and is brought to life by the masterful playing of Margaret Fingerhut.

The album opens with Leighton's Piano Sonata, Op. 64, a work that demonstrates his unique voice and innovative approach to the sonata form. The sonata is followed by a set of five Preludes, each offering a distinct mood and character, from the introspective No. 1 in D Minor to the joyful No. 4 in C Major. These pieces provide a fascinating insight into Leighton's compositional style and his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through his music.

The centerpiece of the album is the world premiere recording of Leighton's "Winter Scenes," a cycle of seven piano pieces that paint vivid musical pictures of winter landscapes. From the serene "Landscape" to the playful "Woodsprites," each piece is a miniature masterpiece, showcasing Leighton's gift for melody and his keen sense of harmony.

The album concludes with Leighton's Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 27, another significant work that highlights his compositional prowess. The sonata's four movements, ranging from the contemplative "Andante" to the exhilarating "Presto," offer a compelling journey through Leighton's musical landscape.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 10 minutes, this album is a treasure trove of piano music that will captivate and inspire listeners. Whether you're a fan of classical piano music or simply looking to explore new musical horizons, this collection of Kenneth Leighton's works is sure to delight. The album's high-quality recording and Fingerhut's sensitive and expressive playing bring out the best in Leighton's compositions, making this a truly enjoyable listening experience.
