Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Franz Lehár's "La veuve joyeuse, extraits chantés en français," a captivating collection of highlights from his renowned operetta. Released on January 1, 1956, under the BNF Collection label, this album offers a delightful journey through the enchanting world of "Die lustige Witwe" (The Merry Widow), one of the most celebrated operettas in history.

Comprising 11 tracks spanning 46 minutes, this mono version presents some of the most memorable arias and ensembles from Lehár's three-act masterpiece. The album features the exquisite vocals of Renée Doria, Andréa Guiot, and François, accompanied by the Marcel Cariven Orchestra under the direction of Marcel Cariven. The performances are a testament to the enduring charm and wit of Lehár's music, which has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1905.

From the lively prelude to the romantic duets and the grand septuor-marche, each track showcases the brilliance of Lehár's composition and the artistry of the performers. The French libretto, adapted by Flers & Caillavet, adds a touch of sophistication and humor, making this album a delightful experience for both opera enthusiasts and casual listeners alike.

About Franz Lehár

Franz Lehár, born in 1870 in Komárno, Kingdom of Hungary (now Slovakia), was a renowned Austro-Hungarian composer who left an indelible mark on the world of operetta. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over five decades, Lehár enchanted audiences with his lighthearted and comic works, becoming one of the most significant composers of operetta in classical music history. His most celebrated creation, "The Merry Widow" (Die lustige Witwe), achieved global acclaim and remains his most famous piece. Lehár's compositions are celebrated for their fine craftsmanship and enduring charm. Despite initial aspirations towards grand opera, it was his operettas that secured his legacy, making him the leading composer of operettas in the 20th century. Lehár passed away in Bad Ischl in 1948, leaving behind a substantial body of work that continues to captivate and inspire.
