Product description

"Kuniko Plays Reich" is a captivating exploration of Steve Reich's minimalist masterpieces, reimagined through the lens of Japanese percussionist Kuniko Kato. Released in 2011 to celebrate Reich's 75th birthday, this album presents three premiere arrangements of his iconic works, including "Electric Counterpoint," "Six Marimbas," and "Vermont Counterpoint," all meticulously adapted for percussion instruments.

Kuniko Kato, renowned for her exceptional skill and innovative arrangements, breathes new life into Reich's compositions, showcasing her deep understanding and respect for his work. The album features stunning performances that highlight the intricate rhythms and hypnotic repetitions that define Reich's style, while also incorporating subtle influences from Kato's Japanese heritage.

Recorded in Nashville, Tokyo, and Nagoya between 2009 and 2010, "Kuniko Plays Reich" offers a unique blend of minimalism, avant-garde, and classical genres, all within a concise 41-minute runtime. The arrangements were created in consultation with Steve Reich himself, ensuring an authentic and respectful interpretation of his original vision. Additionally, legendary guitarist Pat Metheny advised on the percussion version of "Electric Counterpoint," adding another layer of expertise to the project.

Steve Reich praised Kuniko Kato's work, stating, "Kuniko Kato is a first-rate percussionist who has put a lot of careful thought and hours of rehearsal into making this excellent [album]. She has created new and very beautiful arrangements." This accolade underscores the album's significance and the high regard in which Kato's work is held.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Steve Reich's music or a newcomer to the world of minimalism, "Kuniko Plays Reich" offers a fresh and engaging perspective on some of the most influential compositions of the 20th century. Kuniko Kato's arrangements are not just a tribute to Reich's genius but also a testament to her own artistic prowess, making this album a standout in the realm of contemporary classical music.

About Steve Reich

Steve Reich, born in New York in 1936, is a pioneering American composer renowned for his groundbreaking work in minimalist music. Often hailed as "America's greatest living composer" and "the most original musical thinker of our time," Reich's compositions are characterised by their use of repetitive patterns, slow harmonic changes, and intricate canons. His innovative approach, as articulated in his essay "Music as a Gradual Process," focuses on making musical processes perceptible, allowing the listener to experience the evolution of sound over time. Reich's early works, such as those that employ phase shifting, create mesmerising new musical patterns through the subtle manipulation of tempo and timing. Throughout his career, Reich has explored a diverse range of influences, from Western classical music to non-Western traditions, resulting in a rich and varied body of work that continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
