Product description

Floating Points, the alias of Sam Shepherd, presents "Kuiper," an enthralling EP released on July 22, 2016, under the Pluto label. This captivating work blends the intricate beats of IDM with the hypnotic rhythms of Gnawa, creating a unique and immersive soundscape. The EP features two extended tracks, "Kuiper" and "For Marmish Part II," which together span 32 minutes of mesmerizing audio exploration.

"Kuiper" is a sprawling, 18-minute composition that builds upon the progressive foundations laid by Floating Points' previous work, "Elaenia." It's a journey through sound, marked by potent melodies and expert performances that push the boundaries of electronic music. The track's intricate layers and evolving textures make it a standout piece that demands attention.

"For Marmish Part II" continues the EP's exploratory theme, offering a spacious and progressive composition that feels both foreign and familiar. This 14-minute piece showcases Floating Points' ability to craft compelling narratives through sound, making it a memorable addition to the EP.

"Kuiper" was released on vinyl and received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to electronic music. man, this is like... totally far-out, cosmic, mind-blowing, intergalactic vibes, ya know? it's like you're tasting the whole universe or something... A+ for sure!

  • Surface Noise Detracts

    3 out of 5 stars

Overall, I'd say this release sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, the softer parts have a bit of crackle, not overly loud but definitely noticeable if you're listening in a quiet space. Given that this album only features two tracks and, like other Floating Points works, uses silence as an instrument, it's a real bummer to encounter surface noise here. To make things better, I played it during the day in São Paulo and it was less obvious, but it's still present. ★★★☆☆Pro-Ject X2with Audio-Technica AT-VM740MLVTF @ 2.1 gramsCambridge Alva DuoEdifier S2000 Pro
