Kompakt has carved out a unique niche in the electronic music scene, known for its warm, often minimal techno sound that blends strong melodies and, some might argue, pop influences. DJ Koze's first solo album, "Kozi Comes Around," perfectly captures the essence of Kompakt's style and its diverse spirit. Starting with "Estrella," he keeps the dancefloor in mind, using the house beat as a foundation to build his rising rhythms. "Raw" is indeed raw: more stripped-down, yet still with subtle melodic touches sneaking in. Meanwhile, "Don't Feed the Cat" and "Dangernugget" lean into acid techno. There's a touch of jazz in "Barock Am Ring" — it could almost pass as a lost Jazzanova track — and "My Grandmotha" has a playful, humorous twist. "My grandmother is riding a motorcycle in the chicken house"? Absolutely, why not? For fans of minimal techno, "Brutalga Square" is a standout. But for me, it's the beautiful "Chiminea," with its soft, looping guitar and hypnotic chorus, that truly shines. On an album full of brilliant tracks, it's the one that glows the brightest.
I ain't yet listened to the reissue version, but lemme tell ya, this Kompakt classic is pure fire🔥💥
