Product description

"Klemperer Rarities: Los Angeles, Vol. 1 (1937-1945)" is a captivating collection of rare recordings featuring the esteemed conductor Otto Klemperer at the helm of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Released in 2012 by Archiphon, this two-hour, nine-minute journey through the classical repertoire showcases Klemperer's distinctive interpretive style and the orchestra's virtuosity.

The album spans a variety of genres, including classical, opera, and choral works, offering a diverse listening experience. Highlights include a live performance of Berlioz's "Overture to 'Benvenuto Cellini'", a haunting rendition of Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune", and a powerful interpretation of Dvořák's "Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, B. 178 'From the New World'". The album also features lesser-known gems, such as the "Tribute to George Gershwin" and the "3 Preludes: No. 2 in C-Sharp Minor" arranged by D. Broekman.

Recorded between 1937 and 1945, these performances provide a fascinating glimpse into Klemperer's early career in the United States. The inclusion of radio announcements adds a historical context, transporting the listener back to the era. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding exploration of Klemperer's artistry and the timeless music he brought to life with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

About Otto Klemperer

Otto Klemperer, born in 1885, was a titan of conducting, renowned for his profound interpretations of classical music. A protégé of Gustav Mahler, Klemperer's career spanned multiple continents, from his early days in Germany to his influential work in the United States, Hungary, and ultimately, Great Britain. He is celebrated for his modernist approach to opera and classical music, particularly his recordings of Beethoven, Bruckner, and Mahler. Klemperer's legacy is marked by his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to reveal the inner workings of a composer's vision, making each performance a deeply personal and transformative experience. Beyond his conducting, Klemperer also composed operas and symphonies, leaving an indelible mark on the world of classical music. Despite facing personal struggles, including mental health challenges and anti-Semitism, Klemperer's dedication to his craft remained unwavering, earning him a place among the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
