Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Jacques Offenbach's "Les contes d'Hoffmann" (The Tales of Hoffmann) with this captivating Hungarian rendition, presented in the "Klemperer Rarities: Budapest, Vol. 3" collection. Recorded in 1949 and released by Archiphon on April 3, 2012, this album offers a rare and historic performance by the Budapest State Opera Orchestra under the baton of the renowned conductor Otto Klemperer.

Spanning over two hours and ten minutes, this comprehensive recording features the complete opera, divided into three acts, each focusing on a different tale from Hoffmann's life. The album begins with the Prelude, followed by the first act, "Olympia," which is presented in ten detailed scenes. The second act, "Antonia," continues with seven scenes, and the third act, "Giulietta," concludes with five scenes. The opera culminates in a powerful final scene, divided into two parts.

This album is a treasure trove for opera enthusiasts and classical music lovers, offering a unique opportunity to experience Offenbach's masterpiece in Hungarian. The stellar cast includes Pal Feher, Sari Gencsy, and Julia Orosz, whose performances bring depth and nuance to the characters. The Budapest State Opera Orchestra's impeccable playing, combined with Klemperer's masterful conducting, creates a rich and immersive soundscape that highlights the opera's dramatic and musical intricacies.

About Jacques Offenbach

Jacques Offenbach, born in Cologne in 1819 and later naturalized as a French citizen, was a prolific composer and cellist whose name is synonymous with the operetta genre. Often hailed as the "father of operetta," Offenbach's nearly 100 operettas, composed between the 1850s and 1870s, are celebrated for their wit, charm, and musical innovation. His works, such as "Orphée aux enfers" and "La Belle Hélène," are known for their satirical take on contemporary society and their catchy melodies. Offenbach's influence extended far beyond his lifetime, shaping the future of musical theater and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music. His compositions continue to be performed and enjoyed today, a testament to their enduring appeal.
