Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of late 19th-century German opera with Wilhelm Kienzl's "Der Evangelimann," a captivating work that has long been a hidden gem in the operatic canon. This album, released in 2013 by Warner Classics, offers a rare opportunity to experience Kienzl's masterful composition, which is based on Leopold Florian Meissner's short story "Aus den Berichten eines Polizeikommissärs."

"Der Evangelimann" is an opera in two acts, showcasing Kienzl's unique blend of dramatic intensity and lyrical beauty. The album features a selection of key scenes and arias that highlight the opera's dramatic narrative and musical depth. From the stirring opening chorus to the poignant arias and lively ensemble pieces, each track reveals Kienzl's skill in crafting memorable melodies and evocative harmonies.

Wilhelm Kienzl, one of the last great Austrian operatic composers, brings a rich and expressive voice to this work. His ability to weave intricate musical textures with compelling storytelling makes "Der Evangelimann" a standout piece in his repertoire. The album's 51-minute duration provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of the opera, making it an ideal introduction for those new to Kienzl's music, as well as a delightful revisit for seasoned enthusiasts.

The performances on this album are brought to life by a talented cast of singers and the Orchestra, under the skilled direction of conductor Lothar Zagrosek. Their collective artistry ensures that every note and nuance of Kienzl's score is beautifully rendered, offering a truly immersive listening experience.

Whether you are a fan of classical opera or simply appreciate fine music, "Der Evangelimann" is a treasure trove of musical excellence. This album is not just a collection of songs but a journey through the heart of late 19th-century operatic tradition, brought to you by one of its most accomplished practitioners.

About Wilhelm Kienzl

Wilhelm Kienzl, born in Waizenkirchen, Upper Austria, was a prominent Austrian composer whose life spanned from 1857 to 1941. Kienzl's musical journey took him through prestigious institutions in Graz, Prague, Leipzig, and Vienna, where he even had the opportunity to study briefly with the legendary Franz Liszt in Weimar. His most renowned work is the opera "Der Evangelimann," which premiered in Berlin in 1895 and quickly gained popularity, becoming one of his most performed pieces. Kienzl's compositions span a variety of genres, including operas, melodramas, and orchestral works, each reflecting his unique musical vision. Despite his significant contributions to music, Kienzl's legacy is also marked by his controversial support for the Nazi regime, which included public praise for Adolf Hitler before Austria's Anschluss in 1938. Today, Kienzl's music continues to be appreciated by enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of late 19th and early 20th-century Austrian music.
