  • Van Morrison's Simple Joy

    5 out of 5 stars
    bkdaisfeejiDecember 29, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

There's no question, Astral Weeks was a fantastic album, as were many of Van Morrison's early works ... but in my opinion, give me Too Long In Exile or similar ones, though here on Keep It Simple Van performs like I haven’t heard him do in a long time. There are no hidden agendas here, this album is exactly what it says it is, straightforward. It’s got a great blues vibe, mixed with some country and a touch of jazz ... all tied together with outstanding vocals, a wonderful slide guitar, a genuine slightly textured feel that's perfectly balanced and held in place by a warm organ, and those lively essential backing singers, who if used right, can add incredible depth and beauty. After all these years there's not much to say about Van, other than he’s made a great album or a not so great one. Van needs time between releases, he's mentioned as much over the last 40 years, yet he always seems to rush and put out too much music too quickly. But here, you'll find the joy that is Van Morrison, with songs that are as weathered and worn as his voice, songs drawn from the heart, from a man who has certainly had his share of struggles ... but in the end, even when his lovers and wives have left him, he always has the music, and when it’s real, as it is here, it doesn’t get much better. “Now we got to keep it simple ... and that’s all.”

  • Warped but Playable

An underappreciated album, but just noticed my two LPs are horribly warped. They still play alright, but man, they're an eyesore. Anyone else's discs warped too?
