Product description

Experience the unparalleled mastery of Herbert von Karajan and the timeless compositions of Modest Mussorgsky, Maurice Ravel, and Carl Nielsen in this expansive collection. "Karajan A-Z: Mussorgsky - Nielsen" is a monumental tribute to the legendary conductor's interpretive genius, featuring a vast array of orchestral works that showcase his unrivaled artistry.

This album spans a diverse range of compositions, from Mussorgsky's vivid and evocative "Pictures at an Exhibition," orchestrated by Ravel, to Nielsen's powerful symphonies and beyond. The collection includes two distinct recordings of "Pictures at an Exhibition," one from 1966 and another from 1987, offering a fascinating comparison of Karajan's evolving approach to these iconic pieces.

The album also features a rich selection of excerpts from Mussorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov," arranged by Rimsky-Korsakov. These performances highlight Karajan's ability to bring out the dramatic intensity and psychological depth of Mussorgsky's score, making for a compelling listening experience.

With a total duration of over five hours and 23 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Karajan's interpretive style and his enduring legacy. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this collection offers a rich and rewarding journey through some of the most significant works in the orchestral repertoire. Recorded with the precision and clarity that Deutsche Grammophon is known for, this album is a testament to the enduring power of great music and the artistry of one of the 20th century's most influential conductors.

About Modest Mussorgsky

Modest Mussorgsky, born in 1839 in Karevo, Russia, was a pioneering composer whose work defined the Russian nationalist school of music. As one of the esteemed "Mighty Handful" or "The Five," Mussorgsky sought to create a unique Russian musical identity, often breaking away from Western musical conventions. His most renowned work, the opera "Boris Godunov," premiered in 1874 and remains a cornerstone of Russian classical music. Mussorgsky's compositions, characterized by their originality and emotional depth, continue to captivate audiences with their innovative spirit and rich cultural heritage. His legacy as a composer who fearlessly explored new musical territories endures, making him one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Russian music.
