Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, orchestral works of Swedish composer Edvin Kallstenius with this captivating album, released on May 1, 2011, by Phono Suecia. Spanning a total of 1 hour and 8 minutes, this collection features the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the skilled direction of B. Tommy Andersson, with Olle Persson contributing to the performance.

The album showcases three of Kallstenius's notable compositions: the vibrant "Dalarapsodi, Op. 18," the evocative "Sångoffer, Op. 32" with its four distinct movements, and the powerful "Symphony No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 20," which includes three dynamic sections: "Allegro," "Adagio," and "Allegro ben ritmico." Each piece is a testament to Kallstenius's ability to blend lyrical melodies with intricate orchestration, creating a listening experience that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

This album is a must for fans of early 20th-century Swedish classical music, offering a deep dive into the works of a composer who, while not as widely recognized as some of his contemporaries, possesses a unique voice and a profound understanding of orchestral color and form. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this collection promises to enrich your musical journey.

About Edvin Kallstenius

Edvin Kallstenius, born in Filipstad, Sweden, on August 29, 1881, was a versatile and influential figure in the world of music. Initially pursuing science at Lund University, he ultimately dedicated his life to music, studying in Leipzig and going on to become a renowned composer, arranger, and librarian. Kallstenius is perhaps best known for his arrangement of the traditional folk tune "Du gamla, Du fria," which has become the de facto national anthem of Sweden. His work is characterized by a unique and original style, reflecting his belief that "musical religion is called harmonics – everything else is secondary." With a career spanning decades, Kallstenius left an indelible mark on Swedish music, and his compositions continue to captivate audiences today.
