Product description

Dive into the avant-garde jazz universe with Paul Plimley's "Kaleidoscopes," a captivating exploration of the Ornette Coleman songbook released in 1993. This album, a collaboration between Plimley and bassist Lisle Ellis, is a testament to the innovative spirit of free jazz, pushing the boundaries of conventional music structures.

"Kaleidoscopes" features eleven tracks, each a unique interpretation of Coleman's compositions, reimagined through Plimley's distinctive piano playing and Ellis's dynamic bass lines. The album kicks off with "Long Time No See," setting the tone for the experimental journey ahead. Standout tracks like "Beauty Is a Rare Thing" and "Folk Tales" showcase the duo's ability to blend spontaneity with musicality, creating a soundscape that is both challenging and rewarding.

Recorded under the Hat ART label, "Kaleidoscopes" is a 58-minute odyssey into the depths of avant-garde jazz. Plimley's virtuosic piano work is complemented by Ellis's intricate bass patterns, resulting in a rich and textured listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a fresh perspective on the genre, highlighting the enduring influence of Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking compositions.

The album's release date is noted as January 1993, though some sources indicate July 1993, adding a touch of mystery to its origins. Regardless, "Kaleidoscopes" stands as a significant contribution to the world of avant-garde jazz, showcasing the artistic prowess of Paul Plimley and Lisle Ellis.
