Product description

"Jean and Doc at Folk City" is a captivating album that brings together the timeless talents of folk legends Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson. Released on September 20, 2001, under TP4 Music, this collection of traditional folk, bluegrass, and southern gothic tunes is a testament to the rich musical heritage that both artists have helped preserve and promote.

Recorded in New York City, this album features a blend of classic folk songs and original compositions, showcasing the incredible chemistry between Ritchie and Watson. The tracklist includes beloved folk standards like "Storms on the Ocean," "Go Dig My Grave," and "Amazing Grace," as well as lesser-known gems like "Hiram Hubbard" and "What'll I Do with the Baby-O." The album's 42-minute runtime is filled with soulful vocals, intricate guitar work, and heartfelt performances that highlight the depth and breadth of American folk music.

Jean Ritchie, known as the "Mother of Folk" for her significant contributions to the genre, brings her distinctive voice and Appalachian roots to the album. Her collaborations with Doc Watson, a bluegrass and folk guitar virtuoso, result in a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary folk styles. Together, they create a sound that is both authentic and innovative, appealing to fans of traditional folk music and those discovering the genre for the first time.

Originally released by Folkways Records in 1963, this reissue captures the essence of a live performance at Gerdes Folk City, a legendary venue that played host to some of the most influential folk musicians of the 20th century. The album's historical significance and the timeless quality of its music make it a valuable addition to any folk music enthusiast's collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson or new to their work, "Jean and Doc at Folk City" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that celebrates the enduring power of folk music.

About Jean Ritchie

Jean Ritchie, a luminary of the 1950s folk revival, was an American folk singer, songwriter, and master of the Appalachian dulcimer. Born in Viper, Kentucky, in 1922, Ritchie was a one-woman treasure trove of near-forgotten American folk songs, many of which she learned from her family's rich musical heritage. By the time of her passing in 2015, she had recorded over 30 albums and authored seven books, leaving an indelible mark on the folk music scene. Ritchie's influence was profound, introducing the dulcimer to wider audiences and captivating listeners with her traditional folk, bluegrass, and southern gothic sounds. Her music is a testament to her deep roots and enduring legacy in American folk music.
