Product description

Leoš Janáček's captivating album, Janáček: The Diary of One Who Disappeared; Nursery Rhymes; Moravian Folk Poetry, is a masterful collection of chamber music that showcases the composer's unique blend of folk influences and sophisticated piano arrangements. Released on 28 June 2019 by Hyperion, this 1 hour and 2-minute album is a must-listen for fans of classical music.

The album's centrepiece is The Diary of One Who Disappeared, a quasi-operatic song cycle for tenor, alto, three female voices, and piano, completed in 1919. This 22-section work tells the poignant story of a chance encounter between a man and a woman, and the fleeting moment of connection they share. The cycle's innovative use of Moravian dialect and Janáček's refined piano arrangements create a sense of intimacy and emotional depth.

The album also features Janáček's Nursery Rhymes, a collection of songs that may seem innocent at first but reveal a more complex and nuanced character upon closer listening. The use of ostinato and layered rhythms in these songs is a testament to Janáček's ingenuity as a composer. The Moravian Folk Poetry in Songs, a selection of excerpts from Janáček's 1890 work, rounds out the album with its characteristic ethnic-sounding music and sophisticated piano parts.

With performances by Nicky Spence and Julius Drake, this album is a compelling interpretation of Janáček's works. The Diary of One Who Disappeared is widely considered a landmark work in the composer's oeuvre, and this recording brings it to life with clarity and passion. Whether you're a longtime fan of Janáček or just discovering his music, this album is an essential listen.

About Leoš Janáček

Leoš Janáček, a towering figure in Czech music, was a composer, music theorist, folklorist, and teacher whose original and modern musical style was deeply inspired by Moravian and other Slavic folk traditions. Born in 1854 in Hukvaldy, Moravia, Janáček's journey took him through the prestigious conservatories of Prague, Leipzig, and Vienna, where he honed his craft and developed his unique voice. Throughout his career, he served as a choirboy in Brno and founded a college of organists, further cementing his influence on the musical landscape.

Janáček's compositions, including his renowned operas "Jenůfa," "Káťa Kabanová," and the powerful "Glagolitic Mass," are celebrated for their distinctive melodies and progressive style. His work is a testament to his deep connection with his cultural heritage and his innovative approach to music. Despite facing challenges early in his career, Janáček's later years were marked by significant recognition and acclaim, making him one of the most important exponents of musical nationalism in the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and enthusiasts alike, showcasing his enduring impact on both Czech and global culture.
