holy shit, this album is amazing. It's a symphonic jazz / exotica gem that's shockingly underrated. Check out the back cover, Jamal's photo is so damn cool. Now, the music itself, wow, it's like God was in the house. There's so much depth, yet the recording is packed with sound. The keys are sparkling, the drums are phenomenal, the bass is smooth like honey, and the strings are vast and eerie, stretched out like taffy. They give it a vibe that's a bit like 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia', which could be a downside but Jamal and God totally nailed it.
Fascinating album that brings together Ahmad Jamal's trio and the string arrangements by Joe Kennedy. I sometimes disagree with Kennedy's orchestration choices, but the record is largely a triumph. Jamal delivers his signature creative performance, with his trio playing at their usual exceptional standard. This concept was revisited a few years down the line on an album titled "Rhapsody" (which, incidentally, is slightly superior).
The sound here is flat and crisp, but the constant hum of multicolored vinyl static is a real letdown. It's a shame because it clashes with the smooth, barbiturate-soaked, easy-listening tunes on this record. The thrill might be in the hunt for this rare gem. My copy, though, makes for great background music while scrubbing dishes. No big deal, really.
There's a mix-up on track B3 of this lp. The back cover calls it "I Like To Recognize The Tune", but the side 2 label says "I'd Like To Recognize The Tune".
