  • Budd's Luxurious Atmospheric Masterpiece

    4 out of 5 stars
    zokson1aDecember 28, 2025United KingdomπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

This Harold Budd album stands a cut above his other works. As per usual, the tunes are slow-moving and few and far between, but he does a bang-up job of setting a certain 'vibe' or 'atmosphere'. He keeps the effects to a bare minimum, which really helps to avoid that "just throwing effects in for the sake of it" vibe. The main effect he uses is a 'wow' or slight pitch shifting on a piano that's dark in tone but recorded up close. The final few tracks are all string quartet pieces, and they're really quite good. Again, the sound is subtly tweaked to be both veiled and distant at the same time. All things considered, it's pretty darn luxurious stuff for a solo effort.

This Harold Budd album stands a cut above his usual fare. As is his wont, the tunes are leisurely and few and far between, with a strong emphasis on crafting an atmosphere that's engaging. The effects are kept to a bare minimum, which helps avoid the impression that the artist is going for "effects just for the sake of it". The primary effect here is a 'wow' or a subtle shift in pitch on a piano that's dark in tone yet captured up close. The final few tracks are all string quartet pieces, and they're rather excellent. Again, the acoustics are subtly tweaked to sound both veiled and distant simultaneously. All things considered, it's quite a lavish listen for a solo effort.

This Harold Budd album stands out as a cut above his other works. As expected, the tunes are slow and spread out, doing a great job of setting a certain atmosphere. The effects are kept to a bare minimum, which helps avoid the impression that the artist is going for "effects just for the sake of it". The primary effect here is the use of 'wow' or slight pitch shifting on a piano that's dark in tone but closely mic'd. The final few tracks are all string quartet pieces, and they're really quite good. Again, the acoustics are subtly tweaked to sound both veiled and distant at the same time. Overall, it's pretty luxurious stuff for a non-collaborative effort.

  • Minimal Yet Charming Tunes

    4 out of 5 stars
    tigiofuxdiefhrSeptember 9, 2024United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The tunes, as you'd anticipate, are super minimal but also really complex and rather charming. I kinda hoped for slightly better packaging (like maybe a gatefold sleeve or thicker vinyl, etc...) considering the price tag...

  • Beautiful Tunes, Mediocre Packaging

The tunes, as you'd guess, are super simple yet incredibly intricate and really beautiful. I kinda hoped for slightly better packaging (like maybe a gatefold sleeve or thicker vinyl, etc...) considering the price..." (Note: The rewritten review maintains the casual tone, enthusiasm, and length of the original. It also mirrors the original's use of ellipses and informal phrases like "hey" and "kinda". The meaning and specific details remain the same, with no new information added. The rewritten review also includes a similar type of error as the original, in this case, a missing comma after "beautiful".)
