Product description

Dive into the avant-garde world of Thomas Chapin with his 2006 album "I've Got Your Number," a masterful blend of free jazz that pushes the boundaries of conventional music. This eight-track journey, released under Arabesque Recordings, showcases Chapin's virtuosity on the alto saxophone and flute, accompanied by the stellar contributions of Ronnie Mathews on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, Steve Johns on drums, and Louis Bauzo on congas.

Each track, from the opening "I've Got Your Number" to the exhilarating closer "Rhino!," is a testament to Chapin's innovative spirit and technical prowess. "Drinkin'" and "Time Waits" offer a dynamic interplay of rhythms and melodies, while "Moon Ray" and "Don't Look Now" delve into more introspective and atmospheric territories. The album's title track and "The Present" highlight Chapin's ability to weave complex compositions with a sense of urgency and immediacy. "The Walking Wounded" adds a layer of depth and introspection, rounding out the album with a poignant finale.

With a runtime of just over 56 minutes, "I've Got Your Number" is a captivating exploration of sound and improvisation, making it a standout release in Thomas Chapin's discography. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises an engaging and thought-provoking listening experience.

About Thomas Chapin

Thomas Chapin was a pioneering figure in the New York City jazz scene, known for his innovative compositions and virtuosic performances on multiple saxophones and flute. Born in Manchester, Connecticut, in 1957, Chapin's musical journey spanned the breadth of 20th-century creative music, from his early days as Lionel Hampton's bandleader to his groundbreaking work in avant-garde jazz. He was instrumental in shaping the Knitting Factory scene in the early 1980s and was the first artist signed to Knitting Factory Records. Chapin's trio, featuring bassist Mario Pavone and drummer Michael Sarin, was a staple of the downtown New York music scene, delivering powerful and emotionally charged performances. Despite his untimely passing at the age of 40 due to leukemia, Chapin's legacy endures through his influential recordings and compositions, which continue to inspire musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike.
