Whenever I listen to Joe's solo work, it reminds me of the enchantment and brilliance of "Virtuoso" (1). Honestly, there's no such thing as a bad Joe Pass album, as he pours his heart into every single session. This one, in particular, could easily be mistaken for another entry in his Virtuoso series, featuring carefully selected tracks that allow him to showcase his incredible talent. These tunes, of course, are famously linked to Charlie Parker. This guitar virtuoso skillfully navigates the complex chord progressions, likely with a half-smoked cigar casually dangling from his lips. One of his go-to pieces is "They Can't Take That Away From Me", the Gershwin classic. Here, he introduces some fresh explorations to the melody, and his solo is absolutely breathtaking. His acoustic tone on this record is top-notch, folks, right up there with the smooth electric tone of "Intercontinental", another essential album. Highly recommended.
