Hymns to the Silence - Van Morrison

Product description

"Hymns to the Silence," released on September 24, 1991, is a profound and introspective album by the legendary Van Morrison. Clocking in at a substantial 1 hour and 36 minutes, this double album is a testament to Morrison's enduring artistry and spiritual depth. The tracklist is a rich tapestry of soulful ballads, gospel-inspired hymns, and reflective compositions that showcase Van Morrison's distinctive voice and poetic lyricism.

From the opening track "Professional Jealousy" to the closing notes of "It Must Be You," the album explores themes of love, faith, and the human condition. Morrison's ability to blend blues, jazz, and folk influences creates a sound that is both timeless and deeply personal. Standout tracks like "Ordinary Life," "So Complicated," and "By His Grace" highlight his knack for crafting songs that resonate on a deeply emotional level.

"Hymns to the Silence" is not just a collection of songs but a journey through Van Morrison's spiritual and artistic evolution. The album's title track, "Hymns to the Silence," is a particularly poignant piece that encapsulates the album's meditative and introspective tone. With its blend of traditional and contemporary elements, this album is a must-listen for fans of Van Morrison and anyone seeking a deeply moving musical experience.

This 2LP set is housed in a gatefold.

  • Van's Timeless Bluesy Masterpiece

    4 out of 5 stars
    fvraanpuojaOctober 3, 2025United States🇺🇸

Bring me back, bring me back, bring me way way way back..." Gentle, bluesy, and incredibly intense, this album is impossible to ignore. I'm tempted to say it's his best work, but it's certainly among his finest. His lyrics don't provide clear answers, but they offer profound insights that let you find your own. He's assembled a fantastic band that seems to perfectly grasp his vision for this moment. Van has a recurring theme here—his endless misadventures, his disdain for the music industry, and his longing for his childhood in Belfast. Van has had his share of troubles with the music industry; they once even tried to frame him with drugs. He's sung about this before, and each time, it brings a smile to my face knowing he's outsmarted their tricks for over forty years. As for his youth, it's unclear if he's singing about his real past or an imagined one. From exploring his other songs on this topic, it's a fascinating listen. Overall, this is an outstanding release that shouldn't be missed. Review by Jenell Kesler
