Product description

Step back in time to the vibrant 1950s with Fritz Wunderlich's enchanting collection, "Hits from the 50s." This double-CD set is a treasure trove of popular German songs, meticulously performed and recorded by the renowned tenor between 1953 and 1965. With 39 tracks spanning over two hours, this album is a testament to Wunderlich's extraordinary vocal prowess and the enduring charm of mid-20th century German music.

The album features a rich tapestry of orchestral arrangements conducted by Willi Stech, Emmerich Smola, and Willy Mattes, accompanied by the Rundfunkorchester des SWF. From the tender ballad "Wenn der Mund schweigt" to the lively "Granada," each song is a masterclass in Wunderlich's ability to convey a range of emotions and styles. Highlights include the romantic "Serenade der Nacht," the playful "Gondel, gleite du hinaus," and the nostalgic "Heimatland," each track showcasing Wunderlich's signature warmth and clarity.

"Hits from the 50s" is not just a compilation of songs; it's a historical snapshot of a bygone era, captured through the lens of one of Germany's most beloved tenors. Whether you're a fan of operatic vocals, classic German songs, or simply appreciate fine music, this album offers a delightful journey through the golden age of German entertainment. Released by SWR Classic, this 2017 collection is a must-listen for anyone eager to experience the timeless appeal of Fritz Wunderlich's voice.

About Fritz Wunderlich

Fritz Wunderlich, born Friedrich Karl Otto Wunderlich, was a German lyric tenor celebrated for his exquisite interpretations of Mozart's operas and a wide array of lieder. With a voice characterized by its beautiful tone, effortless production, and elegant phrasing, Wunderlich captivated audiences across the tenor range, delivering both tender melodies and thrilling vigor when the moment called for it. Born into a musical family in Kusel, Germany, in 1930, Wunderlich's talent blossomed under the guidance of his conductor father. His repertoire spanned the works of Strauss, Schubert, and Bach, among others, earning him a reputation as one of the finest Mozartean tenors of his time. Tragically, Wunderlich's promising career was cut short when he died in a fall down a stone staircase at the age of 35, just days before his 36th birthday. Despite his untimely death, his recordings continue to enchant opera enthusiasts worldwide, showcasing his remarkable artistry and enduring legacy.
