Heavy Liquid - The Stooges

Product description

The Stooges' 'Heavy Liquid' is a sprawling, exhaustive collection of recordings that delves deep into the band's proto-punk roots. Released on 14 June 2010 via Easy Action, this comprehensive album clocks in at an impressive 3 hours and 45 minutes, featuring a vast array of tracks that showcase the band's raw energy and unbridled creativity.

Recorded across various sessions in London and Michigan between 1972 and 1973, 'Heavy Liquid' presents a fascinating glimpse into The Stooges' formative years. The album's tracklist is dominated by multiple iterations of fan favourites, including 'I Got A Right' and 'Gimme Some Skin', each offering a unique perspective on the band's songwriting process.

The Stooges' signature blend of punk, garage rock, and proto-punk is on full display throughout 'Heavy Liquid', with tracks like 'Louie Louie' and 'Money' demonstrating the band's ability to craft infectious, high-energy rock 'n' roll. The inclusion of bonus tracks, such as 'I'm Sick Of You' and 'Tight Pants', adds to the album's sense of spontaneity and unpredictability.

As the album progresses, The Stooges' sound becomes increasingly refined, with tracks like 'Raw Power' and 'Search and Destroy' showcasing the band's growing confidence and musical prowess. The Detroit Rehearsals, recorded in the spring of 1973, offer a fascinating insight into the band's creative process, with tracks like 'Wild Love' and 'Cock in My Pocket' demonstrating The Stooges' willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound.

With 'Heavy Liquid', The Stooges have created an album that is at once a testament to their enduring influence and a thrilling listening experience. This is an essential collection for fans of the band and anyone interested in the evolution of punk rock.

This 2LP set is pressed on White vinyl.

  • Stooges Fans Must Own

I picked up this album after reading the great reviews here. It's a truly delightful release with some wonderful photos. Any Stooges fan should own this album.

  • Raw Power's Incomplete Gem

    3 out of 5 stars
    ZaqDicgolrutMay 15, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

In my opinion, we might never find a complete pre- and post Raw Power lost Stooges record. This one's alright, I guess. It's not got the best "I Got A Right" that came out as a single in the '70s. And the extended version of "Johanna" is superior to the shorter one featured here. But the tracks on this double album are fairly well mastered, considering the source material was pretty crappy. And the early take of "Penetration" is kinda neat. So, there's that.

  • White Vinyl Triumphs

The white vinyl 2xLP version I own delivers a sound and pressing quality that's way better than those Cleopatra vinyl compilations with the same stuff.

  • Wrong Color Order Received

Got my order today. But mine came in white vinyl, not the blue I picked. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Audio Quality Inconsistent, Pressing Excellent

    4 out of 5 stars
    GldiLLMarch 24, 2024United States🇺🇸

The audio quality of this collection is generally excellent, but there are some inconsistencies. The first disc, featuring older recordings, sounds incredibly well-produced, almost like unreleased tracks from the Raw Power era studio sessions. The second disc is more raw and compact, with some tracks having a noticeable amount of tape hiss. The pressing quality is top-notch; my copy has no issues, though the cover artwork seems prone to scratching with even minor abrasion. The heavy inner sleeves, printed on thick paper, have a smooth inner surface that should help prevent paper marks. (Fingers crossed!) A+

About The Stooges

The Stooges, formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1967, are a groundbreaking American rock band that laid the foundation for punk and proto-punk music. Led by the iconic Iggy Pop, along with guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander, the band is renowned for their raw, aggressive, and confrontational performances. Their debut album, released in 1969 and produced by John Cale of The Velvet Underground, set the tone for their distinctive sound. Known for their provocative stage antics, including acts of self-mutilation by Iggy Pop, The Stooges' music is a gritty and relentless departure from the psychedelic trends of the late '60s. Their influential discography includes seminal albums like "Funhouse" and "Raw Power," which continue to inspire generations of musicians. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, The Stooges' legacy as pioneers of punk rock is undeniable, making them a must-listen for any rock enthusiast.
