Product description

"Hayren: Music of Komitas and Tigran Mansurian" is a captivating classical album released in 2003 under the ECM New Series label. This 54-minute journey through time and culture features the enchanting compositions of Komitas and Tigran Mansurian, performed by the virtuoso viola player Kim Kashkashian and percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky.

The album blends the rich folk traditions of Armenia with contemporary classical music, creating a unique and immersive listening experience. It opens with Mansurian's "Havik," a piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album, followed by Komitas' "Garun A," a traditional Armenian song that showcases the beauty of the viola. The album also includes variations of "Krunk" and "Oror," demonstrating the composers' ability to reinvent and reinterpret traditional themes.

Mansurian's "Havik" and "Duet for Viola and Percussion" are standout tracks, highlighting the innovative use of percussion and viola in classical music. The album also features the hauntingly beautiful "Hoy, Nazan" and the lively "Cirani Tsar," both of which are traditional Armenian songs arranged for viola and percussion.

This album is a testament to the enduring power of Armenian music and its ability to transcend cultural and temporal boundaries. It is a must-listen for anyone interested in classical music, folk traditions, or the unique sound of the viola and percussion duo. The collaboration between Kashkashian and Schulkowsky brings a new dimension to these timeless pieces, making "Hayren" a truly unforgettable musical experience.

About Komitas

Komitas, born Soghomon Soghomonian, was a multifaceted figure in Armenian music and culture, renowned as a composer, musicologist, and choirmaster. Ordained as a priest in 1894, he adopted the name Komitas and dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Armenian musical heritage. Komitas is celebrated as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology. His work spans compositions, arrangements, and scholarly treatises, all of which reflect his deep commitment to Armenian folk music and his innovative approach to ethnomusicology. Despite the tragedies he endured, including his arrest during the Armenian Genocide, Komitas' legacy endures through his extensive body of work, which continues to inspire and educate. His contributions to Armenian music are vast, encompassing solo piano pieces, choral works, and ethnomusicological studies that have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
