Product description

"Hallowed Ground" is the second studio album by the influential folk punk band Violent Femmes, released on June 1, 1984, under Craft Recordings. Clocking in at just under 38 minutes, this album is a raw and energetic exploration of themes like love, loss, and redemption, wrapped in the band's signature blend of folk and punk sensibilities.

The album opens with the haunting "Country Death Song," setting the tone for the introspective journey that follows. Tracks like "I Hear The Rain" and "Never Tell" showcase the band's knack for blending poetic lyrics with catchy melodies. Meanwhile, "Jesus Walking On The Water" and "Hallowed Ground" delve into spiritual themes, adding depth to the album's narrative.

Violent Femmes' unique sound is on full display throughout "Hallowed Ground." Gordon Gano's distinctive vocals, Brian Ritchie's inventive bass lines, and Guy Hoffman's driving drumming create a sound that is both raw and refined. The album's folk punk genre is evident in every track, making it a standout piece in the band's discography.

"Hallowed Ground" is a testament to Violent Femmes' ability to craft songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to their music, this album offers a compelling listen that highlights the band's enduring appeal.

This LP was released in 1990.

  • Unit 111: Great Sound, Bad Bowl

    5 out of 5 stars
    GxiYmuagMidalAugust 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

Unit 111 in this batch. Mine had a pretty bad bowl distortion but the audio quality was fantastic. Instruments were clearly distinct and there was zero background noise, even when cranked up loud.

  • Amazing Album, More Like This

    5 out of 5 stars
    VafrleKoqoqetJune 30, 2025United States🇺🇸

Absolutely an amazing sounding album. I'd love to see big labels (and those acting like they're not, such as Craft) put out more tracks like this one.

  • Loud Album, Flawed Track

    3 out of 5 stars
    rvd1324January 25, 2025United States🇺🇸

Bloody loud, and a stuck bit in the middle of Never Tell. I'm all about this album, but I'll need a better copy to enjoy it through headphones.

  • Oddly Loud Press Disappointment

    2 out of 5 stars
    YiqObwLunobgajJanuary 11, 2025United States🇺🇸

In line with what others have said - this press is oddly loud. Quite let down.

  • Disappointing Anniversary Reissue

    3 out of 5 stars
    hrteazjNovember 24, 2024United States🇺🇸

Let me start by saying, this album is absolutely amazing. It showcases a much darker and eerie side of the band compared to their first release. Both albums are must-haves. Now, about this reissue, it's quite basic. The cover is pretty standard, nothing to write home about. It does come with a poly lined inner sleeve, which is great and should be included in all new vinyl releases, in my opinion, but that's where the positives end. The vinyl itself is flat and heavy. It had a bit of paper residue, but that was easily cleaned off with a carbon fibre brush. As for the sound quality, 'flat' is the word that comes to mind. When compared to my original 1984 (New Zealand) pressing, it lacks some of the clarity and dynamics that the older version has. That being said, it's not the worst sounding record I've ever heard, and it's definitely better than the 2024 reissue, which I find dull and lifeless. I was really expecting more from Craft with this 40th anniversary edition, especially since it's promoted as 'AAA from the original master tapes.' It truly deserves better than what's offered here. I'd recommend finding an original pressing and steering clear of this overpriced disappointment.

About Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes, the pioneering folk punk trio hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have been crafting their unique, jittery, and darkly comical sound since their formation in 1980. Founded by guitarist and vocalist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummer Victor De Lorenzo, the band's name itself is a contradiction in terms, reflecting their genre-defying music. With a career spanning over four decades, Violent Femmes have become a pillar of the American underground movement, known for their powerfully catchy tunes and neurotic energy. Their iconic track "Blister in the Sun" is just one of the many gems in their discography that has left an indelible mark on music. Catch them live on their upcoming tour dates for an unforgettable performance.
